Top 10 AR Creators You’ll Love!

Your IG feed just got better

By Tristan Garner

Oct 27th, 2020

We asked Tristan, the creator behind @filt.ar & head of Augmented Reality at MITP, to take time out of his busy day to tell us his 10 favourite AR creators on Instagram right now.

From groundbreaking effects that push the technology to its limits, to silly filters that become our guilty pleasures, here are 10 AR creators you need to keep your eye on (in no particular order, of course!)

Creators

Ines Alpha (@ines.alpha)

Ines Alpha has such a unique style and I have been hooked ever since I spotted her effects, both on insta and on snapchat.  Undeniable talent.

Favourite Filter - H20 Strobing

The colours, the style. Just great.

Marc Wakefield (@marcwakefieldards)

Marc Wakefield is a stalwart of the Spark AR community; brilliant, gracious and friendly.

Favourite filter - Hole in the Head

Marc really pushed the boundaries of AR with this one, creating one of the more aesthetically pleasing filters from the early days - and it holds up as well now as it did then.

Mitsuko Ono (@mitsukokubota)

Mitsuko Ono is certainly one of the more playful creators going.  I love the absurdity and creativeness.

Favourite filter - Chimpanswing

Really tough to pick from so many weird and wonderful filters but this is my personal favourite.

David O’Reilly (@davidoreilly)

David O’Reilly blew everyone away with his complete flip of traditional filters that take you on a journey.  The visual programming for these effects is insane.

Favourite Filter - Ahhh

Just a crazy filter. You need to see it for yourself.

I have a few more things to share from AAAHHHHHH! before i wrap it up and forget all about it. ⁣ ⁣ It's been seen 60 million times since monday and people have made 3 million videos using it. It’s staggering how wide these go. Feels lame to flex numbers but this a phenomenon i cant wrap my head around. I'm aware this attention has come from working within a framework designed by instagram to keep people coming back here - and not the same as engagement with longer form things. im genuinely excited about the creative potential of these things (especially the last 3) just hard to know if im helping or hindering a dystopian future... something we all face on here, no? ⁣ ⁣ Anyway I wanted to get into the interactive camera.⁣ ⁣ A problem i realized when doing Simulation was that most people didn’t stick around after the first 15 seconds to explore more (it lasts much longer) so i needed to find a new way of expanding them - to make something interesting for 15 seconds as well as longer.⁣ ⁣ What i landed on was this: if you interact with it by swiping on screen & rotating the camera, time can gradually expand. So the moment you explore, you're rewarded with more time and more things to do. The default camera angle is semi-randomized, but designed to edge you offscreen at the end - this is to encourage interaction to 'fix' it and see more.⁣ ⁣ Evolution-time expands to 150 seconds when you rotate the full way around, as shown in my crappy drawing here. Time compression & decompression is something i am obsessed by it runs thru my games, and it was fun to implement it on this tiny scale.⁣ ⁣ The god sequence would be 3 seconds at full speed, but 30 seconds when slowed down (when you can actually see it) which is just enough time for the user to experiment with things to do. There are 2 endings, more on that tomorrow...⁣ ⁣ Here are some videos of you figuring it out - featuring: @garybaseman @fannyrssl @serjjesus @mrshoffy @callme_syahmi @felipe.melgarejos @ali3jackson @deepkarri @graylikestogame⁣ ⁣ Thank you for tagging me! ⁣ ⁣ #interactive #art #bts #evolution #evolve #arfilter #facefilter #facefilters #arfilters #igeffects #davidoreilly #3d #design #realtime #shaders

Eugene Soh (@dude.sg)

Eugene Soh has always been a standout creator but Face Invaders just took gaming on IG to the next level.  Fun, crazy and well crafted.

Favourite filter - Face Invaders

Madness! I’m a big Star Wars fan too, so big appeal here.

My new filter! is not quite your typical filter. really tried pushing the envelope abit with this one to create an epic long form 3D blasting experience (as opposed to my last 15 second 3d blasting game filter) that makes use of the medium, the phone: the camera, back and front, the accelerometer. Some of yall might have played my beta release last week. the version without sound. Thank you for helping me test it. cant list all your names because I'm afraid I might miss someone out. It was an important test. I left the sound effects to be the last to develop and had lots of fun with it. The sound, the music is what finally tied the experience together imho The main theme is composed by @denelleee Game plays slightly differently on front and back camera: **Front Camera:** You are the pilot and you can see your reflection in the windscreen. And all the aliens are you! **Back camera:** plays as a world effect, the galaxy is mixed with reality, your friends become aliens and are part of your game In both, you are in the cockpit of the spaceship, using your phone to aim and fire. After the boss fight, the effect becomes an endless selfie battle, because the alien portal is still open. You fight yourself by raising your eyebrows to shoot while the good guy lasers are auto shooting. Use Instagram "Hands-free" recording mode to bypass the 1 story limit for Android. https://www.instagram.com/a/r/?effect_id=826535744528074

Mike Manh (@mikemanhworks)

Mike Manh is a super talented artist that blew me away, as well as the rest of the community, with his optical camo entry in one of Instagram’s first filter competitions.

Favourite filter - Optical Camo

Inspired by predator films but with it’s own style.

Johanna Jaskowska (@johwska)

Johanna Jaskowska firmly lifted filters beyond the puppy dog ears into a fun new era.

Favourite filter - Beauty3000

Johanna is the OG of aesthetic filters.  There are lots of super cool ones to choose from but this is the one that game changed for me.  Simple yet stunning.

Favourite filter - Supercede

There have been many copies since, but none as good.

Eddy Adams (@eddyin3d)

Eddy Adams has quickly become one of my favourites for his super polished and engaging filters. Looking forward to what he creates next.

Favourite filter - Space Warp

Looks better than a lot of sci-fi films and is super fun.  Aaaaah!

Omega Centauri (@omega.c) and Kuno Hayato (@kuno.fell.asleep)

For my final one I’ve cheated and have a two for one with Japanese based creators, Omega Centauri and Kuno Hayato.  I’ve been a huge fan of both of their work and great to see them joining forces for Hackathons to produce some amazing effects.  Kuno being a master coder with the coolest effects and Omega always bringing style and beautiful movement.

Favourite filter - Motion effect kit

After standing out at a previous Hackathon with their Singularity filter, they managed to win in 2020 with their latest effort - and it’s just amazing. I love the inspiration, as they always seem to be pushing as hard technically as they are aesthetically.
